Family Colon (3)

Our son Kiomar Colon was born a healthy 9lb, 21″ on November 12, 2013 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He was everything we wanted and more and was thrilled and nervous as we entered into this new phase in our lives both individually and as a married couple. The nervous feeling grew as 2 weeks into Kiomar’s life, he was hospitalized for weight loss and dehydration that was later associated with a urinary tract infection and hydronephrosis. As soon as we got out of the hospital we set up an appointment with a pediatric retinologist on January 13, 2014 and, to our surprise, Kiomar was diagnosed with retinoblastoma in both of his eyes.

Being as both me and my wife were graduate students and relying heavily on loans for our academic and day-to-day expenses, we were extremely worried about the complications of the diagnosis along with its treatment and treatment cost. Within the first 24 hours after his diagnosis, we were presented with the existence of the Ronald McDonald House in Miami. The house has relieved us of the burden of having to worry about shelter and food as well as providing us with the opportunity to interact with other families in their time of need. Ronald McDonald House has been invaluable to us and to so many others in need.
