Thank you from our Executive Director
At the Ronald McDonald Houses in South Florida we keep families close. Close to the caring doctors, nurses, their child’s medical treatment. Close to people that understand what they are going through. But most important providing the gift of togetherness. When life unravels a family, it is our job to wrap them with love and comfort, giving them hope to get through the toughest times.
The quality of our services continue to improve as we were able to expand and create three more bedrooms at the Miami House. Thanks to the outstanding, generous and caring community of volunteers and supporters this new initiative is helping an additional 50 families a year.
The holidays have arrived and we kick off the season at our 10th Annual Home for the Holidays and Lighting Ceremony. More than 500 friends participated and help raise more than $73,000. It was an exciting night full of entertainment and lots of fun for all ages.
As you review this newsletter, know that RMHC of South Florida is dedicated in making sure this home, this place of comfort and community remains viable. We are a mission focused organization and each and every time a family receives comfort or happily takes their child home, we are reminded of why we are here.
As 2013 draws to close, we want to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to each one who has donated resources, collected tabs, prepared meals, spent time volunteering, and helped make the Ronald McDonald house a “home-away from home for so many families. Join us in celebrating this holiday season by making an online donation today. All gifts are appreciated and tax deductible. Thank you for your consideration and support. Family’s love is the best medicine of all!
Meet Pilar Cata a volunteer with a mission in mind
Since I moved from California to Miami I was looking for a charity project that I could be involved. My husband did some research, and we found the Ronald McDonald House. I talked to some of my friends and they were very excited, so my friend Olga and I went to visit the House in Miami. We were very impressed, the people working there were very nice and friendly, the building inside and outside is very colorful, it is like the facility helps to diminish the pain that the families are suffering. The interior is very comfortable and “homey”, they have done an incredible job.
So I recruited some friends and we decided to participate in the “Adopt a meal” program once a month. Our groups name is “Damas del Doral” (Doral Ladies), we all are neighbors and very happy to cook a meal for the families. Every time we participate in the activity we have the opportunity to meet all the house guests and have lunch with them. It breaks your heart to see the kids but also watch the parents that are sacrificing everything for their ill children, so much love that it is overwhelming. The first day we were holding our tears it was very emotional to meet the people staying there, from different parts of the world, but still united by one big solid tie, their sick children.
Every month the members of the group varies on participation. It all depends of the free time that our volunteers have but Olga, Carmen Elisa (our chef) and I do not miss any month, and hopefully we will always be present. We enjoy very much going to the Ronald McDonald House. Families, staff and other volunteers receive us with their arms. They offer help in anything we need, all the staff are doing is great job, and it is not an easy one. All the families staying there are wonderful, we have developed a great friendship. Yes, that is what we have become friends and one big family.
The Roberts Family feels right at Home
The Roberts family is from Texas, but have been living in Florida for four years. This family is comprised of single mother, Natashia, and her two children, John Luke, 16, and Diamond, 9. They are at the Ronald McDonald House because Diamond was diagnosed with a brain tumor approximately 3 years ago. They’ve come together as a family to find the best care for Diamond. Her tumor was removed, and is currently seeking treatment for maintenance, and is currently in remission. Although she does have some learning challenges, she is a funny and happy young girl. Her big brother, John Luke, also keeps the smiles and laughs going!
They have nothing but positive things to say about their experience at the Ronald McDonald House. They shared they feel this is a safe and comfortable place. They feel secure and cared for. This house is truly is a home away from home for them, and feel very blessed to have been referred to this organization
