Adderley Family Story

March 11, 2024 — Zariah Adderley and her mother, Kim, arrived from the Bahamas following news of a complicated diagnosis that prompted Zariah to seek a kidney transplant. As a recent high school graduate and class salutatorian, her teenage life quickly transformed into a whirlwind of medical procedures, tests, and constant care.

Housing over 350 families each year, the Ronald McDonald House of South Florida serves as a refuge for those facing complex medical challenges, such as life-saving transplant care at Holtz Children’s Hospital. Zariah Adderley and her mother, Kim, arrived from the Bahamas following news of a complicated diagnosis that prompted Zariah to seek a kidney transplant. As a recent high school graduate and class salutatorian, her teenage life quickly transformed into a whirlwind of medical procedures, tests, and constant care.

While celebrating important milestones away from home is not the first choice, the House is devoted to creating a home-like atmosphere for families. This dedication ensures that families like the Adderleys not only feel supported but also celebrated during significant life moments such as birthdays, holidays, and personal achievements. For Zariah, the timely news of her kidney donation aligned perfectly with her 18th birthday and the upcoming holidays. Within hours of hearing the life-changing news, Zariah received the gift of a kidney. Following her transplant, Zariah was able to celebrate her birthday, Christmas, and New Year’s at the House, with her own family and among other families navigating similar challenges.

During her stay, Zariah formed a bond with another Bahamian teenager, Diamond, also on the transplant journey for a liver condition. Both girls, sharing backgrounds and diagnoses, created enduring memories, supporting and celebrating each other’s milestones, whether medical or personal. Establishing a community of families facing similar challenges proved pivotal for the Adderleys, as they offered support and comfort during difficult times and celebrated one another during the moments that mattered most.

Reflecting on their time at the House, Kim expressed, “The Ronald McDonald House isn’t just about room and board – though that’s important. It’s the community of individuals facing similar challenges that has truly shaped our journey. Being here surpasses any other place because no one understands your feelings better than someone who has walked the same path you’re on right now.”

Now back in the Bahamas, Zariah settles into her new routine, feeling the positive effects of her new kidney. Zariah balances her recovery with aspirations of obtaining a college degree in Business. In between doctor’s visits, you could always find her attending online classes and completing schoolwork — resolute in her pursuit of a brighter future beyond the confines of her medical challenges.
