18 Dec Lauren Sánchez Has a Galactic Adventure in Literacy at RMHC South Florida
December 18, 2024– Get ready for lift-off! Journalist, philanthropist, and author Lauren Sánchez visited RMHC South Florida to share her inspiring children’s book, The Fly Who Flew to Space. During the visit on Tuesday, December 17, Sánchez read her book to the children and had the opportunity to meet with their families. Smiles, laughter, and a sprinkle of hope were ignited among the children and families who call RMHC home during tough times.
Sánchez knows firsthand the power of imagination and the importance of literacy. Drawing from her journey with dyslexia, Sánchez crafted a captivating tale about a fearless fly named Flynn, who dares to chase his dreams of becoming an astronaut. This New York Times and USA Today Bestseller proves that even the smallest creatures can have the grandest ambitions!
“I want to thank the team at RMHC South Florida for the incredible work they are doing to improve the lives of families facing extraordinary challenges,” said Lauren Sánchez. “It was truly an honor to have the opportunity to spend time with these sweet children and hopefully brighten their day.”
In Florida, where reading rates have declined, only 39% of elementary students were tested proficient in reading in 2022. Promoting literacy is more important than ever. For children facing serious health challenges and their siblings who often travel with the family while in treatment, missed school days can mean missed opportunities to learn and grow. RMHC South Florida is on a mission to ignite a love for reading, providing children with the essential tools they need to thrive in school and life.
Visits from inspiring figures like Sánchez are a beacon of hope for families at RMHC South Florida. The children face daunting health challenges that can disrupt their education and limit their chances for fun and friendship. By offering engaging activities and memorable experiences, RMHC South Florida helps ease the stress and isolation that often accompany serious illness.
“We are beyond grateful to Lauren Sánchez for dedicating her time and talents to our families,” said Soraya Rivera-Moya, Executive Director of RMHC South Florida. “Her visit was truly out of this world! By inspiring our families to read and dream without limits, she has gifted them a treasure they’ll carry for a lifetime.”
