Sun Sentinel Highlights the Philanthropic Wave Transforming South Florida Healthcare

June 7, 2026A historic wave of philanthropic investment is reshaping the medical landscape of South Florida. As recently highlighted in a major feature by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, multi-million-dollar contributions from local visionaries and philanthropists are pouring into regional health systems.

From cutting-edge cancer research to massive hospital expansions, these investments are elevating South Florida into a premier global hub for specialized clinical care. RMHC South Florida was proudly spotlighted in this landmark story alongside the region’s largest medical developments. The Sun Sentinel explicitly highlighted our milestone as part of this transformative wave, noting:

“Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida ($3 million, 2026) to support a family campus that will nearly double lodging capacity for families whose children are receiving life-saving medical treatment.”

As the feature notes, world-class medical treatments are only half of the healing equation. True pediatric recovery requires keeping families close, supported, and strong. That is where Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida and the future Griffin Family Campus come in.

When pediatric specialty programs at institutions like Jackson’s Pediatric ER and Holtz Children’s Hospital expand, they naturally attract families from across the state, the country, and the globe. But complex medical journeys often span weeks or months. For parents, navigating a child’s critical illness is emotionally exhausting and financially draining, especially when faced with the cost of lodging, food, and travel in a major city.

The Sun Sentinel piece underscores what it means for patients when “big money” enters local healthcare: it means better facilities, shorter discharge times, and access to elite medical minds. With South Florida’s health systems growing rapidly, the demand for RMHC’s services has never been higher. Currently, due to limited space, our House is forced to place over 125 families on a heartbreaking waitlist each year.

Once completed, the new $33 million Griffin Family Campus will nearly double our capacity from 31 to 54 rooms. RMHC South Florida is in the home stretch of our Capital Campaign, with just $4 million left to close our $33 million goal.

Through Florida’s newly established “Home Away From Home” Tax Credit Program, local corporations have a historic opportunity to help us cross the finish line at zero cost to their business. Starting July 1, 2026, Florida businesses can apply to redirect their state corporate income, excise, or insurance premium tax liabilities into 100% dollar-for-dollar tax credits that go directly toward building and operating our new House.

Learn how your business can participate in the tax credit program starting July 1 by visiting rmhcsouthflorida.org/capital-campaign-corporate-tax-credit-program/ or donating to the Capital Campaign today.
